Representatives of the different institutions of Gran Canaria were present in a unique setting, the Nublo Rural Park.

The presentation of the Transgrancanaria HG 2017 was held this Thursday next to the spectacular landmark of Roque Nublo, iconic symbol of Gran Canaria. This is one of the most important trail running events in the world.

The presentation was attended by the president of the Council of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, the Gran Canaria Tourism Board president, Inés Jiménez, the Minister of Sports of the Council of Gran Canaria, Ángel Víctor Torres, the co-organizer of Transgrancanaria HG event, Fernando Gonzalez, US runner Timothy Olson and the Canarian athlete Yeray Durán.

A total of 3,800 runners will participate in some of the races to be held from 22 to 26 February in Gran Canaria. The spectacular Transgrancanaria HG 125 will start again from Agaete. The Marathon will start on Friday and, as a novelty, the first edition of the Transgrancanaria 360°, which will kick off the great trail celebration on Wednesday 22 February. We should not forget about the Advanced, Starter and Promo / Family races.

The president of the Council of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, highlighted the economic impact of more than 6 million euros that implies the Transgrancanaria event for the Island thanks to the promotion in international media and the direct expenditure generated by non-resident athletes during their participation in the race. In addition, he stressed the solidarity behind the Transable, “a race of competition that aims the social inclusion of people with some type of disability through the practice of outdoor sports.”

Angel Víctor Torres, the Minister of Sport, emphasized how the Transgrancanaria event is the living example of why Gran Canaria is the European Sport Island. This 18th edition has the firm intention of being able to advertise even more the image of Gran Canaria and to place it as the first ultra-distance race in Europe.

Torres underlined that the number of participants who have enrolled in the six races serves as evidence of the success of the event. 3,800 souls from 70 nationalities will make their best in these races in an island where sport is highly valued.

“This is a race that challenges all laws of logic that goes beyond the resistance, the speed and the force. Not everyone is able to travel Gran Canaria from north to south, from east to west to discover places of such beautiful scenery.” In short, “an important sports race that meets the values of this European Sport Island,” concluded the Minister of Sport of the Council of Gran Canaria.

The Minister of Tourism of the Council of Gran Canaria, Inés Jiménez, highlighted the important promotional work carried out by Transgrancanaria worldwide. She noted that in this edition the objective is to surpass the 250,000 people who arrived last year via social networks and described Gran Canaria as one of the best tourist destinations in Europe to practice sport in nature.

Jiménez also stressed that 42% of the participants in the race are foreign athletes who automatically become prescribers of the destination. This is due to the incredible satisfaction they show at the end of their participation in the race. “They value the hospitality, the landscape and the climate of Gran Canaria. They are sure they will come back to the Island in the future to experience a new adventure.”

Fernando González, co-organizer of the event, highlighted the responsibility of Arista Eventos in increasing the quality standards of the race. In this regard, he recalled that the self-protection plan has “one of the highest requirements compared to other international events.” The novelties are also very common, this edition includes the Transgrancanaria 360°. This is a race only suitable for the brave ones in which a hundred exclusive runners will cover the 265 kilometres via GPS navigation over several days.

“We are convinced that the best way to understand what the race means is to get closer to the goal. Only here will we discover the shared challenges, tears and tenacity. The Transgrancanaria HG family knows how to showcase these characteristics which, as a whole, become our incentive to continue year after year”, emphasized Fernando González.

The remaining sponsors were present among the guests of the presentation: Zoilo Alemán, representing Expomeloneras; Oliver Armas, manager of RS Sonocom; and Eva Molina, on behalf of Hospital Perpetuo Socorro.
