Transgrancanaria returns to Agaete with the start line of the Advanced race

The race returns to Puerto de las Nieves six years later as the Advanced grows up to 80 kms

The town will be a strategic point of the event as it will host, for the second consecutive year, El Gigante.

Transgrancanaria returns to Agaete six years later and does it in a big way. The Puerto de las Nieves will be the starting point for the Advanced modality, which this year changes its distance to 80 kilometres. The northern municipality will become one of the epicentres of the trail festival, to be held between 22 and 26 February 2023, as it will also host the second edition of The Vertical Kilometre El Gigante, from El Valle.

The inclusion of the seafaring town to kick off the Advanced is a return to the origins of Transgrancanaria. For years, the runners of the Classic used to arrive at night at the old Las Nieves dock and from there, they would set off towards Tamadaba and follow the trails of the island until they reached the finish line.

For this 21st edition of Transgrancanaria, the new track of the Advanced, which will be held on Saturday 25 February, will start from this same point. The runners will face a first ascent with more than 1,300 metres of positive height gain until they reach the summit of Pico de la Bandera, in the Tamadaba Natural Park. The route will continue until it reaches Artenara, where it will link up with the main event until Parque Sur in Maspalomas, which will host the finish of the three longest races in what will be the culmination of the trail festival that will take place on the island.

The village of Agaete will also be in charge of starting the next edition of the KV El Gigante for the second consecutive year, which starts on Wednesday, 22 February, in the district of San Pedro to face a steep slope to the Era de Berbique and finish in Tamadaba. It will be 5.7 kilometres with a total of 1,130 metres of positive height gain.

The mayoress of Agaete, María del Carmen del Rosario, is “enormously grateful” to the Transgrancanaria organisation “for having remembered Agaete again” for the start of the Advanced and KV modalities. “It is important for everyone to know that Agaete is not only sun and beach, that we have restaurants, we have El Valle, Tamadaba”, that it is also a Biosphere Reserve and Biosphere Heritage; “that it is a town that mixes tourism, culture and sport, which I believe is the path we have to follow for the future of our municipality”. The councillor also invited the participants to stay overnight in some of Agaete’s hotel establishments, including the new nomadic hotel that will host workers from dozens of countries.

María del Carmen del Rosario fondly remembers the start of the Transgrancanaria Classic from the Las Nieves dock. “One of the most beautiful and important nights that I remember, not only because everyone came at night, because we entertained them with the Agaete Band, but also because they got to know the town, were in the restaurants, had dinner, enjoyed the shows that we had all night long”.

Registration, both for the Advanced and KV El Gigante modalities and for the rest of the Transgrancanaria races, will be open from the 5th of July.
