Courtney Dauwalter, the world’s best ultra-distance runner, will be in the Transgrancanaria SWE

The American, who is making her debut in a long distance race in Spain, has won every race over 100 kilometres in the last four years – “Transgrancanaria has been on my list of races I wanted to try for many years”, says the Salomon International team athlete.

The American Courtney Dauwalter will be on the night of February 24th on the sand of Las Canteras beach to start the Transgrancanaria SWE Classic, first stage of the Spartan Trail World Championship. The best ultra-marathon runner in the world will make her debut in a long-distance race in Spain and aspires to continue enriching her long list of victories in the most iconic races of the world circuit after winning the HardRock100 in the USA, the UTMB in the Alps or the Diagonale des Fous on the French island of Reunion.

“I’ve had Transgrancanaria SWE on my list of races I’ve wanted to try for many years,” says the Salomon International team athlete. “I’ve heard incredible things about the island and the race, and I can’t wait to soak it all in”, adds Dauwalter, who says she feels “very lucky” to discover the places of Gran Canaria with her husband. Looking ahead to the race, the ultra-marathon runner says that one of her goals is to “start the season with some quality” within what elite runners call the “pain cave”. The other goal: “To have fun while I travel across the island with my feet”.

The American comes to Gran Canaria with an impeccable track record. Since February 2018, she has won all the long-distance races she has competed in, except for one edition of the historic Western States and the mythical The Barkley Marathons, in which she was forced to withdraw. His superiority in this type of races is also reflected in the absolute victories he has achieved in several races, including the MOAB 240 (Utah) of 383 kilometres that he covered in 2 days, 9 hours and 55 minutes, almost ten hours ahead of the second classified.

Born in Hopkins (Minnesota) 37 years ago, Dauwalter has been involved in sports since she was a child, always focusing on track and cross country, as well as Nordic skiing. In Nordic skiing, the American has won four Minnesota high school championship titles. Thanks to a scholarship for her results in this sport, she managed to get into the University of Denver to study teaching.

His incursion into ultra-marathons began in 2011 with the 80-kilometre Run Rabbit Run, where he came sixth. It was not until 2016 that he made a qualitative leap in long-distance races, with four victories, and a year later he became a professional athlete with the Salomon team. Since 2018, he counts practically all his participations in long-distance races in victories: 17 out of 19 races, according to the data of the International Trail Running Association (ITRA).

Dauwalter, who last year competed in the Zegama-Aizkorri marathon in the País Vasco where she finished tenth, joins a long list of American runners who have been present in the Transgrancanaria SWE with unequal fortune for men and women. While the women have already achieved a victory with Kaytlyn Gerbin in 2020 and a second place with Abby Hall in the last edition, the men have yet to win despite the fact that great runners such as Scott Jurek -retired in 2014-, Anton Krupricka -sixth in 2015- or Hayden Hawks -retired in 2019 and 2022- have passed through Gran Canaria.

The Transgrancanaria SWE is sponsored by the institutions Cabildo de Gran Canaria through Turismo de Gran Canaria and Gran Canaria Isla Europea del Deporte, the Government of the Canary Islands with Islas Canarias Latitud de Vida, Maspalomas Costa Canaria, Instituto Municipal de Deportes of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Town Hall of Tejeda; and the companies SWE, Fred. Olsen Express, Hospitales Universitarios San Roque, Expomeloneras, 226ERS and Sonocom Audiovisuales, as well as the collaboration of Provital, Fuente Umbría, Emicela, Pepsi Max, Coros, Vivac Aventura, Inerza, Hotel Aloe Canteras and Tirma.
