The greatest runners will meet in the Classic of the Transgrancanaria HG 2022

More than 60 international elite runners will take part in the first event of the Spartan Trail World Championship circuit at the Trail Ultra distance.

The 126-kilometre race will start at 23:00 on Friday, 4 March, and will cross the island from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Maspalomas.

This year, the Transgrancanaria also attracts a lot of attention in Spain and abroad. One of the pioneering trail running races returns this March with the help of great legends who will gather on our island to compete again. Some will be fighting for the podium, others will be looking to defend their titles and some will simply be measuring their strength against themselves.

The race, which is part of the Spartan Trail World Championship for yet another year, will surprise its participants in a special edition due to its 20th anniversary. Mountain lovers will be able to enjoy a spectacular course, with new modifications in order to offer a different experience to the athletes. The main event of the Transgrancanaria HG promises a unique route crossing the most emblematic trails of the island of Gran Canaria. It will pass through the Roque Nublo and finish in the Parque Sur de Maspalomas with an event in style with live music and during which the trophies will also be awarded.

The favourites in the Classic (men’s category)

After his absence from the Transgrancanaria HG 2021, the four-time Classic champion Pau Capell is back with a bang. His sacral injury last year kept him away from the competition. Therefore, this year he returns to the fight to try to get his fifth victory and reaffirm, once again, that he is one of the greatest. Pablo Villa will also be looking for the highest place on the Classic podium. The runner from Leon, who shared an epic victory with Capell in 2020, wants to return to the Transgrancanaria with the desire to give his best after suffering an injury during last year’s race and not being able to finish it.

From the United States comes a large representation of elite athletes ready to conquer the Classic for the first time. Two of them, Hayden Hawks and Jared Hazen, return to the Transgrancanaria after offering a great show in 2019 and 2020, respectively, editions in which they retired after battling for podium positions. In addition, two other top athletes like Sage Canaday and Jimmy Elam, who will be making their debut on the island and will raise the competitive level of the race.

Another illustrious debut in the Classic will be that of the Japanese Ruy Ueda, one of the best runners on the Asian continent, who will take on the 126 kilometre race starting in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The Japanese will be a great candidate for the podium along with the current runner-up, Pere Aurell, the Romanians Ionel Cristian Manole and Robert Hajnal, the 2016 champion Didrik Hermansen, the Swiss Jonas Russi, the Argentinean Gabriel Rueda, the Italian Francesco Cucco, the French Baptiste Chassagne, the Portuguese Luis Fernandes or the great national riders Jordi Gamito, Mario Olmedo, Isaac Riera, Rodrigo Monasor, José Ángel Fernández or Isaac Salvat. One more year, the Canarian elite will also be a candidate for everything thanks to the presence of Alejandro Mayor, Estanislao Rivero, Ricardo Luis Trujillo, Esteban García, Octavio León, Carmelo González or Alex Fraguela, among others.

The female candidates for victory in the Classic

The absence due to injury of Azara García De los Salmones, twice winner of the Classic, will be felt this year in Transgrancanaria, although the level will still be very high in the women’s race. The American Kaytlyn Gerbin, who has already become a legend of the race, returns to the island, as in her two participations, she has already won a victory (2020) and a second place (2019). The runner from Seattle will have as one of her main competitors the Dutch Ragna Debats, considered one of the best ultrarunners on the international scene and world champion in 2018, and who last year had to withdraw in El Garañón when she was fighting for the first places in the Classic.

The Catalan athlete Claudia Tremps, runner-up in 2021 and one of the most promising ultradistance runners, repeats for the third consecutive year in the Classic and will surely be one of the great entertainers of the women’s race. The presence of the American Abby Hall, current runner-up in the CCC, and the debut of the Swiss Kathrin Gotz – champion of Lavaredo Ultra-Trail, Eiger Ultra-Trail and podium in the TDS – will be some of the highlights of this Transgrancanaria HG 2022.

The list of favourites for this Classic is completed by the Slovenian Martina Potrc, the French Lucie Jamsin and Claire Bannwarth, the Hungarian Eszter Csillag and Ildiko Wermescher, the New Zealander Sophie Grant, the German Shari Wilken, the American Amy Sproston and the Canary Islanders Yasmina Castro and Sandra Moreno.

As every year, the first major race on the international calendar will once again bring together the greatest athletes from all over the world. This year it will be marked by the change of location of the finish line, new features in the course and, of course, by the health measures that have been established to ensure the safety of all participants. Now all that remains is to start the countdown to the starting gun.

Transgrancanaria is an event organized by Arista Eventos, with SportHG as the main sponsor, and with the institutional sponsorship of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria – through the Tourism and Sports boards –, Promotur Canary Islands, Maspalomas Costa Canaria and the Town Hall of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The companies Fred. Olsen Express, Amlsport, Expomeloneras and RS Sonocom continue as official sponsors of the race, and this year 226 ERS and the Vital Suites Hotel have also joined the Transgrancanaria family.
