Transgrancanaria official statement: February 1st

Hi there!

We get back in touch with you for an update of the situation regarding Transgrancanaria HG 2021. As we stated a few days ago, we were really optimistic on celebrating the race as scheduled and we remain positive ?

To start with, we have posted some FAQs in our website that may be helpful for you to have some answers. Please read them and make sure you understand them.

The Covid-19 data in the Canary Islands is still the best in Spain and the restrictions from the Government of the Canary Islands have been really helpful in order to control the pandemic. However, last week the Government decided that Gran Canaria should stay at least one more week in Alert Level 3, and as a consequence we are at the same point as we were at our last statement.

At the end of this current week there will be a new meeting of the Canary Islands Health Board to evaluate the situation of every island. As we have explained, Transgrancanaria can be celebrated if we reduce our Alert Level to Phase 2, a very likely scene to happen in the following weeks.

What are the following steps to be taken?

  • If Gran Canaria’s alert level is reduced to Phase 2 at the end of this week: the race will be held as scheduled.
  • If Gran Canaria’s alert level remains at Phase 3 at the end of this week: the organization will wait one more week until the next Government update which will be taken on February 13th.

Can the runners cancel their race entries?

Yes, as our regulations state there are two ways of cancelling a race entry:

  • If the refund insurance has been hired: he/she will have the right of a full refund – except the insurance fee and the extra services – without time limit (until February 26th).
  • If the refund insurance has not been hired: the runner has the right of a partial refund as stated in the regulations. This time limit expired on January 24th, but has been extended until February 8th until our next statement.

With this information, we want to repeat that the event is still moving forward for February 24-28th. Our idea is that the runners who have strongly prepared the 2021 edition and who have invested some savings in tickets and accommodation don’t suffer variations and we can all live a great event as we have every year in Transgrancanaria HG.

We hope that this uncertainty can end really soon and that our schedule remains untouched for the race. We all have this ‘last-minute feeling’, but with the times we are living in, even the good news may be confirmed at the very last moment 🙂
