WAA 360º is on track after a memorable start from Tenerife

This morning, 70 runners made it from Gran Canaria to Tenerife to start the greatest Transgrancanaria HG challenge

The first part of the trail goes through Macizo de Anaga and Fred. Olsen Express will take the runners back to Agaete to resume the race

This February 24 will go down in the history of Transgrancanaria HG. For the first time in 22 editions, the race will leave Gran Canaria to start from another island. For this wild challenge, the runners were chosen to take part in the WAA 360º.

Today at 04:00 am, the 70 runners taking part in WAA 360º met at Expomeloneras to be taken to Puerto de las Nieves harbour. From there, a Fred. Olsen Express ferry took them early in the day to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where the Organization has arranged a transport to Igueste de San Andrés.

From ‘Semáforo de Anaga’, the runners set off this tough 30 km trial through some of the most rural routes in the north of Tenerife. A true test for these brave runners. Collaboration from the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, its sports department and the Cabildo de Tenerife, has been fundamental for achieving this dream on two islands.

Throughout the day, the runners will come back to Gran Canaria to resume the trial on the island. This non-stop race will test the participants all the way through, since chronometres will not stop. The runners will have three Fred. Olsen Express ferries to come back to Gran Canaria: 14:00 h, 18:00 h and 20:00h.

Once back to Agaete, the runners will have to face another 213 km through some of the wildest and most spectacular trails in Gran Canaria. As every year, navigational skills with GPS will be essential, since the routes are not signed. After taking a break before boarding a Fred. Olsen Express ferry and once the runners are on the island, they will find other four basecamps: Teror, Valsequillo, Santa Lucía and Soria (Mogán). The finish line at Expomeloneras might start receiving the first WAA 360º 2021 finishers early on Friday morning.

Among the champions who will be taking part on the race, there’s the Italian Luca Papi (three-times winner), Eugeni Roselló, Maxime Cros, Iván Galván, José Antonio Hernández, Pavel Paloncy or Marco Gubert, as well as some female champions: the French Claire Bannwarth, Marina Plavan or María del Carmen Pérez Guerra.

This Transgrancanaria 360º event has been possible thanks to the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, and it marks a milestone on sport events during this health crisis we are going through.
